Introduction
When you meet people for the first time, you have to introduce yourself. After that you can have a little conversation. This can be a little difficult. What are you going to talk about?
Assignment
1. Write down a few subjects you could discuss with someone you meet for the first time.
2. Write down some questions you can ask someone you meet for the first time. (Eg. What's your name? Where do you live?
3. Now, your group/class is going to sit in two large circles. One circle will be inside the other one. The people of the two circles have to look at each other.
4. The teacher or group leader will start a countdown of five minutes. During this time you and the person sitting opposite you, are going to introduce yourself and have a little conversation.
5. When these five minutes are over, the people in the inner circle will move one place ahead.
6. The conversation will take place again.
7. Write about what you thought was interesting.
Answer the following questions:
•How did it go?
•Did you find this exercise difficult or easy?
•Did you sound 'English'?
Now, take some time to make a list which you can use in a private situation like a holiday and a list which you can use in a business-like situation.
Again, form two circles and repeat the exercise.
Now write the answers to the following questions for your report.
•Did you behave in a way that would be acceptable in a business-like situation?
•Did you behave in a way that would be acceptable in a foreign country?
•How do you know?
•......(anything you wish to add).
